This project is financed within the framewok of the Belgian Science Policy Office’s (BELSPO) research program for earth observation ‘STEREO III’ (eo.belspo.be/en). The project runs from December 2017 until the beginning of 2020.
The general objective of the project is to develop a region-wide spatially explicit garden map of Flanders. The project is implemented by a consortium including prof. dr. Ben Somers, expert remote sensing of the Catholic University of Leuven, and Jo Van Valckenborgh, expert image processing chain of Information Flanders Agency.
The project aims to explore image processing techniques to extract spatially explicit information on the location and area of gardens in Flanders. The different garden cover components (e.g. trees, grass, low green, sealed surface and water) will be mapped on a regional scale with aerial imagery (both RGB and LiDAR). Subsequently, added value products from high resolution satellite imagery like Pleiades and Sentinel 2 will characterize garden cover and dynamics. Combining both techniques and tracks will offer an integrated monitoring solution for ‘gardens’ to the end-user. Sub-pixel and object-based classification techniques will be applied, tested and optimized on a regional scale. The validation of the garden maps derived from both tracks will be relying on existing field inventory data.
